This is a combined TOP 20 poll using information gathered from the Boston Herald, Boston Globe, Maxpreps.com, hssinsight.com and highschoolsports.net for WEEK 7. The goal is to provide the ultimate combined Top 20 in EMass sports.
Here is the TOP 20, each team's opponent this week, whom they won and lost against year-to-date, opponents wins and losses, record versus teams that were in the Top 20 at the time they played them and the remaining games on each teams schedule.
NOTE: Only games played against EMass Top 20 teams are reflected in each team top 20 record. No WMass/CMass or out-of-state. Too hard to compare apples to apples. However, those team's records are reflected in opponents records.
#1-(1.40)-D1-XAVERIAN (7-0) vs St. John's (Shrewsbury) (7-0), 1:30pm (Saturday)
Last week's rank (1). Xaverian (30.7 PF/G-10.4 PA/G) took 3 OT's to finally defeat Bridgewater-Raynham (28-26) last week. This week the Hawks will have to maintain their focus (last non-league game of the year) with the always tough CMass St. John (32.0 PF/G-11.0 PA/G) Pioneers. Most rankings have these two teams as the top 3 or 4 teams in the state. Next up is BC High, followed by 2 more Catholic Conference opponents. No rest for the weary.
Wins: Malden Catholic, Waltham, Brockton, Somerville, Hudson Catholic (NJ), Everett, Bridgewater-Raynham
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (27-17)
TOP 20: (3-0)
Games remaining: BC High, Catholic Memorial, St. John's Prep
#2-(2.30)-D2-READING (7-0) @ Burlington (5-2), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (2). Reading (38.6 PF/G-6.0 PA/G) defeated Belmont last week (42-7) despite the loss of RB Tino Perrina for the second half. The Rocket's offensive backfield (Pollack, etc) will be more than up for the challenge this week against Burlington (24.0 PF/G-11.3 PA/G). Watch out for the Red Devils as they have already played Billerica tough this year. With that being said, expect another Reading win as they await Woburn on deck.
Wins: Cambridge, Masconomet, Winchester, Melrose, Wakefield, Malden Catholic, Belmont
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (20-29)
TOP 20: (0-0)
Games remaining: Woburn, Lexington, Stoneham
#3-(4.55)-D1-BROCKTON (6-1) vs Leominster (3-4), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (3). The Boxers (24.3 PF/G-12.7 PA/G) took out Big 3 foe Durfee (42-12). This week it is perennial CMass opponent Leominster (15.9 PF/G-19.7 PA/G). Home cooking should do Brockton just fine as they head in to a late season bye week.
Wins: BC High, Taunton, St. John's Prep, Fitchburg, Pinkerton Academy (NH), Durfee
Losses: Xaverian
Combined record of opponents: (26-22)
TOP 20: (1-1)
Games remaining: Bye, New Bedford, Waltham
#4-(5.1)-D1A-GLOUCESTER (7-0) vs Lynn English (6-1), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (4). The Fisherman (33.0 PF/G-6.0 PA/G) posted a shutout of Peabody (34-0) last week. This week a huge NEC (Large) showdown with the Bulldogs of Lynn English (34.1 PF/G-19.4 PA/G). Expect this one to be a lot closer than most think as English has an explosive offense lead by QB Tyllor MacDonald. The winner can almost smell a playoff berth. Next up, the Revere Patriots.
Wins: Swampscott, Andover, Winthrop, Beverly, Salem, Masconomet, Peabody
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (25-23)
TOP 20: (0-0)
Games remaining: Revere, Lynn Classical, Danvers
#5-(6.00)-D2-NATICK (7-0) @ #17 Needham (7-0), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (5). The Red and Blue (40.7 PF/G-7.0 PA/G) defeated Milton (49-14) last week. This week Natick's diversified offense and unsung defense take on undefeated Needham (24.0 PF/G-9.7 PA/G). By far, on paper, the most competitive game to date for each team. Expect a Natick "W" buoyed by their multi-dimensional offense. The Red and blue are in to the iron part of their schedule with Weymouth next up followed by....Walpole.
Wins: Newton North, Norwood, Brookline, Dedham, Braintree, Wellesley, Milton
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (13-36)
TOP 20: (0-0)
Games remaining: Weymouth, Walpole, Framingham
#6-(8.55)-D1A-BRIDGEWATER-RAYNHAM (6-1) @ Dartmouth (1-6), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (6). The Trojans (26.9 PF/G-13.9 PA/G) lost a heartbreaker in 3 OT's to #1 Xaverian (28-26) last week. This time a short week to prepare for the Dartmouth (8.1 PF/G-28.3 PA/G) Indians. Shouldn't matter as BR should take this OCL battle. The following two weeks are OCL battles so this is when a loss will really hurt.
Wins: Duxbury, Durfee, Marshfield, New Bedford, Attleboro, LaSalle Academy (RI)
Losses: Xaverian
Combined record of opponents: (30-18-1)
TOP 20: (2-1)
Games remaining: Barnstable, Taunton, Randolph
#7-(8.65)-D2-FRANKLIN (7-0) @ Stoughton (1-6), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (8). The Panthers (28.3 PF/G-15.6 PA/G) took care of their second OCL opponent last week with a convincing (42-14) win over Taunton. This week its back to the HOCK with only their second road game since September 17th against Stoughton (28.7 PF/G-17.2 PA/G). Expect a little bit of a let down as the Panthers next three opponents are a combined (3-18) heading up to their T-Day matchup with King Philip.
Wins: Attleboro, Milford, Mansfield, Canton, Foxboro, North Attleboro, Taunton
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (29-19)
TOP 20: (3-0)
Games remaining: Sharon, Oliver Ames, King Philip
#8-(8.85)-D2-WALPOLE (7-0) vs Braintree (2-5), 1:00pm (Saturday)
Last week's rank (7). The Rebels (29.9 PF/G-5.9 PA/G) shut out Dedham (35-0) despite Ryan Izzo being on the shelf. This week a quest for win number 21 in a row against Braintree (11.6 PF/G-23.9 PA/G). Expect the video game type scoring for the last time as the Rebels next three opponents are a combined (19-2) as they head in to the meat of their schedule.
Wins: Framingham, Milton, Newton North, Wellesley, Brookline, Norwood, Dedham
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (14-35)
TOP 20: (0-0)
Games remaining: Needham, Natick, Weymouth
#9-(9.00)-D1-CENTRAL CATHOLIC (6-1) @ Chelmsford (4-3), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (9). The Raiders (23.3 PF/G-12.3 PA/G) got by a pesky Lawrence team last week (21-7). This week a MVC (Large) match-up on the road with Chelmsford (22.7 PF/G-21.7 PA/G). Expect the Lions to throw everything but the kitchen sink (and to run Joe Gennaro as much as possible) as their season is essentially on the line. Too close to call. No breaks in the schedule the rest of the way for the Raiders as their last 4 games are against teams with a combined record of (20-8) including two Top 20 teams and two former Top 20's. Ouch!
Wins: St. John's Prep, Dracut, Tewksbury, Haverhill, Lowell, Lawrence
Losses: Marlboro
Combined records of opponents: (20-28)
TOP 20: (2-0)
Games remaining: Methuen, Billerica, Andover
#10-(10.65)-D2-DRACUT (5-2) vs Andover (5-2), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (10). Dracut (33.0 PF/G-19.1 PA/G) sailed past Chelmsford (42-20) last week. This week a MVC crossover game against the Andover (27.4 PF/G-19.4 PA/G). A spirited battle with the Golden Warriors should occur as they are coming off an upset loss to Methuen. The Middies offensive weapons (Silva, Gauthier, Shepherd) are too much to handle and the Middies pull away in the second half. Next up MVC (Small) Lawrence.
Wins: Marshfield, Everett, Lowell, Tewksbury, Chelmsford
Losses: Central Catholic, Billerica
Combined record of opponents: (28-19)
TOP 20: (2-1)
Games remaining: Lawrence, Bye, Methuen
#11-(11.75)-D1-EVERETT (3-2) vs Medford (3-3), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (11). Last week a bye for the Tide (14.4 PF/G-18.6 PA/G). This week their first look this year at the GBL and Medford (17.3 PF/G-17.0 PA/G). I think first year coach Rico Dello Iacono will have the Mustangs, uhm, motivated as he turns the program around. Expect a close first half followed by Everett pulling away in the second half. Nothing but GBL the rest of the way for the Tide.
Wins: Leominster, St. John's Prep, BC High
Losses: Dracut, Xaverian
Combined record of opponents: (20-13)
TOP 20: (0-2)
Games remaining: Somerville, Malden, Cambridge
#12-(12.00)-D1-BILLERICA (6-1) vs Lowell (1-6), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (12). The Indians (25.4 PF/G-14.6 PA/G) methodically beat Haverhill (35-0) last week. This week it an MVC (Large) game against Lowell (12.1 PF/G-28.1 PA/G). Almost a must win for the Indians as the rest of their schedule doesn't have any cupcakes on it. The only time Billerica was held under 20 points was when Nick LaSpada missed the Tewksbury game.
Wins: Burlington, Woburn, Methuen, Dracut, Lawrence, Haverhill
Losses: Tewksbury
Combined record of opponents: (22-26)
TOP 20: (1-0)
On Deck: Andover, Central Catholic, Chelmsford
#13-(13.30)-D2-MANSFIELD (6-1) vs #19 King Philip (6-1), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (14). Mansfield (37.6 PF/G-8.7 PA/G) shut down Canton last week (43-0). This week they entertain a determined King Philip (32.4 PF/G-7.6 PA/G) that will be fighting for its HOCK playoff lives. The good news for the Hornets is that since Coach Redding's return their offensive (34.3 PF/G to 42.0 PF/G or 22.5%) and defensive (12.0 PA/G to 4.3 PA/G) numbers have both improved significantly. I'm going with the Hornets here in what is a truly must win. Next up the Red Rocketeers.
Wins: Dartmouth, Minnechaug, Stoughton, Sharon, Oliver Ames, Canton
Losses: Franklin
Combined record of opponents: (17-31)
TOP 20: (0-1)
Games remaining: North Attleboro, East Bridgewater, Foxboro
#14-(13.35)-D2A-FALMOUTH (7-0) @ #15 Marshfield (5-2), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (15). The Clippers (30.7 PF/G-11.0 PA/G) shut out Plymouth North (41-0) last week. The win wasn't shocking but the domination was. Falmouth is clearly one of the top surprises of the year to date. This week is essentially a playoff game against ACL big boy Marshfield (22.0 PF/G-12.6 PA/G). Flip a coin and sit back and enjoy. Next week a potential stumbling block in the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins.
Wins: Rockland, Somerville, Dartmouth, BC High, Sandwich, Nauset, Plymouth North
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (18-28)
TOP 20: (1-0)
Games remaining: Dennis-Yarmouth, Plymouth South, Barnstable
#15-(16.80)-D2A-MARSHFIELD (5-2) vs #14 Falmouth (7-0), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (17). The Rams (22.0 PF/G-12.6 PA/G) swept both Plymouth with their (34-7) win over South last week. This week a must win against Falmouth (30.7 PF/G-11.0 PA/G) as the Rams only have one Atlantic Coast game remaining. Strength of schedule leans slightly Marshfield's way but not enough to predict a winner. Next up a week to recuperate.
Wins: Lincoln-Sudbury, Dennis-Yarmouth, Nauset, Plymouth North, Plymouth South
Losses: Dracut, Bridgewater-Raynham
Combined record of opponents: (32-19)
TOP 20: (1-2)
Games remaining: bye, Sandwich, Duxbury
#16-(19.00)-D2A-MASCONOMET (5-2) vs Wilmington (6-1), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (19). Big win last week for the Chieftains (24.3 PF/G-16.4 PA/G) over the Triton Vikings (42-19). I expect the Splinter/Bunker law firm to be a force to reckon with this week in against the Wilmington (25.7 PF/G-9.9 PA/G) Wildcats. Masconomet's tough schedule has them prepared for the CAL (Large) battle. Next up. Pentucket.
Wins: Lowell, Lincoln-Sudbury, Westford Academy, Newburyport, Triton
Losses: Reading, Gloucester
Combined record of opponents: (30-19)
TOP 20: (1-2)
Games remaining: Pentucket, Malden Catholic, North Andover
#17-(19.50)-D1A-NEEDHAM (7-0) vs #5 Natick (7-0), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last weeks' rank (20). The Rockets (24.0 PF/G-9.7 PA/G) virtually locked up the Bay State-Carey crown with last week's win over Weymouth (18-8). This week they are out to honor their Carey brethren with a battle against Herget power Natick (40.7 PF/G-7.0 PA/G). I like the visitors in this one. A split in back-to-back games against Natick/Walpole would be all you could ask for.
Wins: Dedham, Braintree, Milton, Newton North, Norwood, Brookline, Weymouth
Losses:
Combined record of opponents: (13-36)
TOP 20: (0-0)
Games remaining: Walpole, Framingham, Wellesley
#18-(20.40)-D3-BISHOP FEEHAN (5-1) vs Attleboro (3-4), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (18). The Shamrocks (22.3.6 PF/G-10.7 PA/G) were victorious over Bishop Stang (36-6) last week. This week cross town rival Attleboro (28.0 PF/G-27.0 PA/G) who has been reeling since being stuffed at the goal line by Bridgewater-Raynham. Look for the EAC to best the OCL in this one. Next up the Durfee Hilltoppers.
Wins: Foxboro, Barrington (RI), Martha's Vineyard, Coyle-Cassidy, Bishop Stang
Losses: North Attleboro
Combined record of opponents: (22-19)
TOP 20: (0-0)
Games remaining: Durfee, Somerset, Sandwich
#19-(22.40)-D2-KING PHILIP (6-1) @ #13 Mansfield (6-1), 7:00pm (Friday)
Last week's rank (NR). The Warriors (32.4 PF/G-7.6 PA/G) got back in the win column with a (28-20) decision over North Attleboro. It isn't going to be easy staying in the win column this week at Mansfield (37.6 PF/G-8.7 PA/G). By the way,the sounds you hear emanating through the stands aren't fall crickets. They are just text messages being sent to the Franklin rooters updating the score. Next up, Stoughton.
Wins: Hopkinton, Bellingham, Sharon, Oliver Ames, Canton, North Attleboro
Losses: Fairhaven
Combined record of opponents: (15-32)
TOP 20: (0-0)
Games remaining: Stoughton, Foxboro, Franklin
#20-(22.50)-D2-METHUEN (5-2) @ Tewksbury (3-4), 1:30pm (Saturday)
Last week's rank (NR). The Rangers (20.0 PF/G-12.7 PA/G) crack the Top 20 for the first time with a (14-7) win over Andover. This week Cal Carroll and the boys take on stubborn Tewksbury (16.4 PF/G-20.4 PA/G). Big game for both in the MVC (Small). I'll take the visitors but it will take 44 minutes to decide it. Next up, Central Catholic.
Wins: Concord-Carlisle, Malden, Lowell, Haverhill, Andover
Losses: Billerica, Chelmsford
Combined record of opponents: (23-26)
TOP 20: (1-1)
Games remaining: Central Catholic, Lawrence, Dracut
Dropping out was Andover and Catholic Memorial.
