EMASS Football--EmassSports.com Top 20-10/13/09-WEEK 5

This is a combined TOP 20 poll using information gathered from the Boston Herald, Boston Globe, Maxpreps.com, hssinsight.com and highschoolsports.net for WEEK 3. The goal is to provide the ultimate combined Top 20 in EMass sports.

Here is the TOP 20, each team's opponent this week, whom they won and lost against year-to-date, opponents wins and losses, record versus teams that were in the Top 20 at the time they played them and next week's opponent.

NOTE: Only games played against EMass Top 20 teams are reflected in each team top 20 record. No WMass/CMass or out-of-state. Too hard to compare apples to apples. However, those team's records are reflected in opponents records.

#1-(1.80)-D1-XAVERIAN (5-0) @ #9 Everett (3-1), 1:30pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (1). Xaverian (33.6 PF/G-6.8 PA/G) took care of Hudson Catholic (NJ) last week (42-0) handily. I'm not sure the next 3 weeks, Everett (14.8 PF/G-18.5 PA/G) this week, then Bridgewater-Raynham and St. John's of Shrewsbury (who some will argue is the best team in the state) will go as smoothly. At least the last two are at home. A true test of a #1 team.

Wins:
Malden Catholic, Waltham, Brockton, Somerville, Hudson Catholic (NJ)
Losses:
none
Combined record of opponents:
(11-12)
TOP 20:
(1-0)
On Deck:
Bridgewater-Raynham

#2-(2.30)-D2-READING (5-0)
vs Malden Catholic (2-3), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (2). Reading (37.2 PF/G-4.2 PA/G) overpowered Wakefield last week (48-7). This week the Rockets face a Malden Catholic (19.4 PF/G-30.2 PA/G) team that is prone to giving up gobbles of points. Not good for the Lancers. This one should be over early, unless the Rockets are looking past this to next week's game against Belmont. One caveat, except for Masconomet the rest of Reading's schedule to date has struggled.

Wins:
Cambridge, Masconomet, Winchester, Melrose, Wakefield
Losses:
none
Combined record of opponents:
(8-17)
TOP 20:
(0-0)
On Deck:
Belmont

#3-(4.95)-D1-BROCKTON (4-1)
@ Pinkerton Academy (NH) (4-2), 2:00pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (4). The Boxers (20.0 PF/G-12.6 PA/G) disposed of CMass Fitchburg last week (27-12). This week they travel north again to take on New Hampshire power Pinkerton Academy (32.0 PF/G-14.7 PA/G). The Astros have struggled against upper echelon teams so expect a convincing Brockton victory. Next week Big 3 action commences.

Wins:
BC High, Taunton, St. John's Prep, Fitchburg
Losses:
Xaverian
Combined record of opponents:
(15-10)
TOP 20:
(1-1)
On Deck:
Durfee

#4-(5.15)-D1A-GLOUCESTER (5-0)
@ Masconomet (4-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (3). The Fisherman (35.2 PF/G-5.6 PA/G) took it to Salem last week (33-0) garnering their second straight shutout. This week they take on a Masconomet (22.8 PF/G-15.4 PA/G) team that's only hiccup has been a loss to #2 Reading. Interesting to note that three of Gloucester's victims (Swampscott, Andover, Beverly) have not lost to anybody but the Fisherman.

Wins:
Swampscott, Andover, Winthrop, Beverly, Salem
Losses:
none
Combined record of opponents:
(14-10)
TOP 20:
(0-0)
On Deck:
Peabody

#5-(8.00)-D2-NATICK (5-0)
vs Wellesley (4-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (6). The Red and Blue (37.4 PF/G-4.2 PA/G) rolled over fellow Bay Stater Braintree last week (36-0) behind another outstanding effort from Scott McCummings. This week its a home tilt against the Wellesley Raiders (22.6 PF/G-16.6 PA/G) whose only blemish was to Walpole. Expect Natick to be victorious. The good news is the matchup with the Rebels is finally getting within shouting distance.

Wins:
Newton North, Norwood, Brookline, Dedham, Braintree
Losses:
none
Combined record of opponents:
(5-20)
TOP 20:
(0-0)
On Deck:
Milton

#6-(8.60)-D1A-BRIDGEWATER-RAYNHAM (5-0)
vs LaSalle Academy (RI) (5-0), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (8). The Trojans (28.0 PF/G-10.6 PA/G) took a big step toward the OCL title with a (21-20) nail biter over Attleboro. There is no rest for the weary as this week the #1 team from Rhode Island, LaSalle Academy (30.0 PF/G-8.4 PA/G) rides in to town. Should be a dogfight right down to the final whistle with state bragging rights on the line. I believe only one Emass team has lost an out-of-state game so far this year (Lowell to Nashua South). Next up after this...#1 Xaverian at their place. OUCH.

Wins: Duxbury, Durfee, Marshfield, New Bedford, Attleboro
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (12-12-1)
TOP 20: (2-0)
On Deck:
Xaverian

#7-(8.85)-D2-WALPOLE (5-0)
vs Norwood (2-3), 2:00pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (7). The Rebels (28.4 PF/G-5.4 PA/G) shut out Brookline last week (35-0) despite a rash of injuries. This week another home tilt, this time against rival Norwood (16.4 PF/G-26.2 PA/G). Expect the Rebels to extend the longest winning streak in EMass to 19 games when this one is all said and done versus the Mustangs.

Wins: Framingham, Milton, Newton North, Wellesley, Brookline
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (7-18)
TOP 20: (0-0)
On Deck: Dedham

#8-(8.90)-D2-FRANKLIN (5-0)
vs #18 North Attleboro (4-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (9). Those two primates, aptly named Mansfield and Foxboro, you see walking around downtown Franklin are just the monkeys the Panthers (28.4 PF/G-17.6 PA/G) have got off their backs so far this season. Franklin will be looking to add a third this week when North Attleboro (29.2 PF/G-7.4 PA/G) comes to town. The biggest game since the biggest game since the biggest game this year for the Panthers. Expect this one to go right down to the last minute.

Wins: Attleboro, Milford, Mansfield, Canton, Foxboro
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (14-10)
TOP 20: (2-0)
On Deck: Taunton

#9-(9.90)-D1-EVERETT (3-1)
vs #1 Xaverian (5-0), 1:30pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (12). A nice "W" last week over BC High (14-13) for the Tide. Everett (14.8 PF/G-18.5 PA/G) has, except for the second half against Dracut, had a very stingy defense. They are going to need every bit of their defense plus their offense is going to have to crank it up if they expect to get by #1 Xaverian (33.6 PF/G-6.8 PA/G). This is the Tide's last game against the outside world as they enter the GBL part of their schedule.

Wins: Leominster, St. John's Prep, BC High
Losses: Dracut
Combined record of opponents: (10-10)
TOP 20:
(0-1)
On Deck: Medford

#10-(10.80)-D1-CENTRAL CATHOLIC (4-1)
@ Lowell (1-4), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (13). The Raiders (24.2 PF/G-15.8 PA/G) took care of Haverhill last week (45-14). Expect much the same this week against a Lowell (16.0 PF/G-31.6 PA/G) that is prone to giving up the big play. Next up for Central Catholic is the Lawrence Lancers.

Wins: St. John's Prep, Dracut, Tewksbury, Haverhill
Losses: Marlboro
Combined records of opponents: (12-13)
TOP 20: (2-0)
On Deck: Lawrence

#11-(11.05)-D1-CATHOLIC MEMORIAL (4-0)
@ Bishop Guertin (NH) (6-0), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (10). CM (30.3 PF/G-12.8 PA/G) slugged it out with WMass juggernaut Longmeadow last week ultimately prevailing (35-33). This week they check out the foliage on their way to take on the #1 team in New Hampshire, Bishop Guertin (43.2 PF/G-4.2 PA/G). A big mid-season test for the Knights especially coming off last week's battle. Next up is Catholic Conference foe Malden Catholic.

Wins: Lynn Classical, Haverhill, Hartford (VT), Longmeadow
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (7-14)
TOP 20: (0-0)
On Deck: Malden Catholic

#12-(12.75)-D2-MANSFIELD (4-1)
@ Oliver Ames (0-5), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (11). Mansfield (37.2 PF/G-12.2 PA/G) had their highest offensive output of the season (48-13) in Coach Mike Redding's return to the sideline. Look for much the same this week as they travel down the road to play an OA Tigers (7.0 PF/G-36.8 PA/G) team that hasn't got it going yet this season. The Foxboro loss to Franklin last week didn't help matters for the Hornets as they fight to regain control of their own destiny.

Wins: Dartmouth, Minnechaug, Stoughton, Sharon
Losses: Franklin
Combined record of opponents: (10-15)
TOP 20: (0-1)
On Deck: Canton

#13-(14.35)-D2-DRACUT (3-2)
@ Tewksbury (2-3), 2:30pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (14). Dracut (31.0 PF/G-20.0 PA/G) got back in the win column with a decisive (45-20) win over Lowell. This week its a road game against a pesky Tewksbury (16.4 PF/G-20.4 PA/G) bunch coming off an upset of then #5 Billerica. Expect this to stay close until late in the second half. Next up is another Top 20 team, Chelmsford.

Wins: Marshfield, Everett, Lowell
Losses: Central Catholic, Billerica
Combined record of opponents: (15-9)
TOP 20: (2-1)
On Deck: Chelmsford

#14-(14.90)-D1-BILLERICA (4-1)
vs Lawrence (2-3), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (5). The Indians (21.6 PF/G-16.4 PA/G) were involved in another close game only this time, minus stud Nick LaSpada, they take it on the chin (12-7) from Tewksbury. This week they look to rebound against a Lawrence (23.6 PF/G-29.0 PA/G) team that already has one upset this year against a Top 20 team, Chelmsford. Expect Billerica to put the peddle to the metal and get the "W" here.

Wins:
Burlington, Woburn, Methuen, Dracut
Losses:
Tewksbury
Combined record of opponents:
(13-11)
TOP 20:
(1-0)
On Deck:
Haverhill

#15-(15.45)-D2-KING PHILIP (5-0)
@ Fairhaven (3-2), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (15). The Warriors (37.0 PF/G-2.6 PA/G) had no problem with Canton last week (31-0). This week its the South Coast's Fairhaven (19.2 PF/G-18.2 PA/G) who might have bit off more than they could chew in this non-league affair. The iron is on the horizon for KP as 4 of the last 5 are against, North Attleboro, Mansfield, Foxboro then Franklin. Expect a slight downgrade in the XBox numbers the have been putting up on offense and defense.

Wins: Hopkinton, Bellingham, Sharon, Oliver Ames, Canton
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (6-18)
TOP 20: (0-0)
On Deck: North Attleboro

#16-(18.00)-D2A-PLYMOUTH NORTH (5-0)
vs Marshfield (3-2), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (17). The Eagles (28.6 PF/G-6.8 PA/G) had no problem taking care of Cambridge last week (43-14). The bar is raised this week as ACL power Marshfield (21.4 PF/G-16.2 PA/G) comes to town. Another Top 20 game that should come down to the wire. Flip a coin for the winner. Next up for Plymouth North is #19 Falmouth.

Wins: Medfield, Duxbury, Silver Lake, Nauset, Cambridge
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (8-15-1)
TOP 20: (0-0)
On Deck: Falmouth

#17-(19.00)-D3-BISHOP FEEHAN (3-1)
vs Coyle-Cassidy (2-3), 1:00pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (20). The Shamrocks (19.8 PF/G-13.0 PA/G) got their sea legs last week with a convincing (35-7) win over Martha's Vineyard. This week they host a Coyle-Cassidy (19.0 PF/G-19.2 PA/G) that had RB Brendan Scarafone rush for over 200 yards in his return to action last week. This game usually decides the EAC but not this year as Somerset is still in the mix. Next up Bishop Stang.

Wins: Foxboro, Barrington (RI), Martha's Vineyard
Losses: North Attleboro
Combined record of opponents: (14-6)
TOP 20: (0-0)
On Deck: Bishop Stang

#18-(19.40)-D2-NORTH ATTLEBORO (4-1)
@ #8 Franklin (5-0), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (18). The Red Rocketeers (29.2 PF/G-7.4 PA/G) rebounded nicely last week against Oliver Ames (46-0). This week it is off to Pantherland to take on Franklin (28.4 PF/G-17.6 PA/G). Besides the Red Rocketeer faithful pulling for the hometown team, you will also have the towns of Foxboro and Mansfield rooting for North to hand Franklin their first loss. Otherwise, the league title will start slipping away from both those teams. Such is life in the Hockomock League. On deck the #15 King Philip Warriors.

Wins: Wakefield, Bishop Feehan, Stoughton
Losses: Foxboro
Combined record of opponents: (6-9)
TOP 20: (1-0)

On Deck: King Philip

#19-(20.00)-D2A-FALMOUTH (5-0)
vs Nauset (1-3), 1:00pm (Sunday @ MMA)

Last week's rank (19). The Clippers (26.6 PF/G-13.0 PA/G) defeated Sandwich (28-13) last week. This week they take on a Nauset (6.0 PF/G-25.3 PA/G) team that has struggled to score. Expect a Falmouth home win before their big game with #16 Plymouth North next week..

Wins: Rockland, Somerville, Dartmouth, BC High, Sandwich
Losses: none
Combined record of opponents: (7-18)
TOP 20: (1-0)
On Deck: Plymouth North

#20-(20.40)-D1-CHELMSFORD (4-1)
vs Andover (4-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last weeks' rank (NR). The Lions (23.6 PF/G-16.4 PA/G) climb back in to the Top 20 with a (24-7) win over Methuen. This week should be one of the more entertaining games of the weekend as they oppose Andover (31.4 PF/G-20.2 PA/G). The last team with the ball wins. Next up isn't any easier as Dracut looms.

Wins: Waltham, Acton-Boxboro, Haverhill, Methuen
Losses: Lawrence
Combined record of opponents: (9-15)
TOP 20: (0-0)

On Deck: Dracut

Dropping out was Foxboro.
