EMASS Football-EmassSports.com Top 20-9/23/09

This is a combined TOP 20 poll using information gathered from the Boston Herald, Maxpreps.com, calpreps.com, hssinsight.com and highschoolsports.net. The goal is to provide the ultimate combined Top 20 in EMass sports.

Here is the TOP 20 and this week's opponents.

#1-(2.40)-XAVERIAN (2-0) @ #5 Brockton (1-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (1). Xaverian has done nothing to dissuade the pollsters of their top ranking outscoring their first two opponents by an average score of (42-10). The road will get a lot tougher heading in to Boxer Country this week against a Brockton team that will be sky high for this one.

#2-(3.00)-DRACUT (2-0) vs Central Catholic (1-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (5). A convincing second half explosion over then #2 Everett was shocking, to say the least. Will face a pesky Central Catholic team that would catapult in to the Top 20 with a win. The Middies best not look past this game to next week's showdown with Billerica.

#3-(3.95)-READING (2-0) @ Winchester (1-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (6). Let's critique the Rockets offense..nope averaging 35 points a game. How about the defense..nope haven't given up a point. OK then good luck Winchester.

#4-(4.45)-MANSFIELD (2-0) @ #12 Franklin (2-0), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (4). The Hornets first test of many in the Hockomock League this year. The Panthers are averaging 32.5 ppg against some good early season competition but expect the Hornets (37.5 off/ppg-def/ppg 3.5) to ratchet up the defense on Franklin QB Nick Colson. Mansfield's first team offense and defense will see their most extensive action of the season to date.

#5-(5.10)-BROCKTON (2-0) vs #1 Xaverian (2-0), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (3). Whew. That was close. Boxers almost got snared in the "trap game" against Taunton but at the end of the day it was a win. The same effort this week against the Hawks won't yield the same results. Brockton will need to be at full health and bring their "A" game is this battle of unbeatens. As usual, the Boxers have a tough opponent on deck, St. John's Prep.

#6-(8.35)-NATICK (2-0) @ Brookline (0-2), 2:00pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (13). The Red and Blue have been on a roll (34.0 off/ppg-7.0 def/ppg) and things don't appear that they will change against a struggling Brookline team that has only mustered 6 points of offense in its first two games. I would image that Natick would look to shut down the Brookline's Irvin Scott, get the "w" and head home.

#7-(8.85)-GLOUCESTER (2-0) vs Winthrop (1-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (11). Surprise, surprise the Fisherman off to another fantastic start. Gloucester (33.5 off/ppg-10.5def/ppg) will be tested this week by a scrappy Winthrop (26.0 off/ppg) team that is coming off a tough loss to Lynn English. No rest for the weary as they travel to Beverly next week.

#8-(9.50)-EVERETT (1-1) @ St. John's Prep (1-1), 1:30pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (2). The Crimson Tide hung for a half against the Middies then the roof just caved in. No cause for concern yet for the young Everett team except their (14.0 off/ppg) so far is troubling. This week they are facing a St. John's Prep team that was upset last week by Central Catholic. Both teams will look to bounce back this week but one of these Emass powers is going home (1-2). With BC High and Xaverian on the landscape it doesn't get an easier for the Tide in the coming weeks.

#9-(11.90)-CATHOLIC MEMORIAL (2-0) vs Hartford (VT) (1-2), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (9). CM (17.0 off/ppg-3.0 def/ppg) will be taking on Vermont's 7th ranked team in the Hartford (VT) Hurricanes (20.33 off/ppg-23.66 def/ppg) this week. Last week the Knights dismantled the Haverhill Hillies (27-6). Next up on the ticket is trip to Wmass perennial power Longmeadow.

#10-(12.35)-MARSHFIELD (1-1) @ #16 Bridgewater-Raynham (2-0), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (14). The Rams had a nice bounce back win over Lincoln-Sudbury (22-7) after hanging with #2 Dracut in Week 1. It doesn't get any easier for Marshfield as they travel to play a red hot Trojan team that is averaging 38.5 ppg. Next week it is back to the ACL against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins.

#11-(12.40)-WALPOLE (2-0) vs Newton North (1-1), 7:00pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (7). The Rebels (20.5 off/ppg-3.0 def/ppg) shut out Milton last week (21-0) to extend their Emass football's longest current winning streak (including playoffs) to 15. This week they take on the Bay State League's Tigers who are coming off a (28-13) decision over Framingham. All-world RB Ryan Izzo has scored five of the Rebel's six TD's this year.

#12-(13.8)-FRANKLIN (2-0) vs #4 Mansfield (2-0), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (17). The Panthers (32.5 off/ppg-16.5 def/ppg) took care of the OCL (Attleboro) and Cmass (Milford). This week the stakes are raised as they take on #4 Mansfield at home. Is this the year the Panthers get over the hump and crack the upper echelon of the Hock? We will know more after Friday's game against the Hornets.

#13-(14.10)-BILLERICA (2-0) @ Methuen (2-0), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (11). The Indians (23.0 off/ppg-14.0 def/ppg) haven't overpowered any yet but the bottom line is they are (2-0) heading in to this week's battle of unbeatens against Methuen (21.5 off/ppg-12.5def/ppg). They better keep their eye on the prize as they got a tough one @ #2 Dracut next week.

#14-(14.40)-NORTH ATTLEBORO (2-0) @ Stoughton (0-2), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (NR). The Red Rocketeers (29.0 off/ppg-6.5 def/ppg) enter the Top 20 fresh off a convincing (24-0) win over then #18 Bishop Feehan. All systems go this week against a struggling Stoughton (10.5 off/ppg-27.0 def/ppg). North has to be wary not to look past this game and their clash next week at home against the Foxboro Warriors.

#15-(14.85)-BC HIGH (1-1) vs Acton-Boxboro (1-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last weeks' rank (8). The Eagles get in the win column with a terrific (42-14) win over Wmass' Springfield Central. This week they take on the Dual County League's Colonials who are coming off a heartbreaking (28-21) OT loss to #18 Chelmsford. The Falmouth Clippers are on deck for BC High.

#16-(17.40)-BRIDGEWATER-RAYNHAM (2-0) vs #10 Marshfield (1-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (16). The Trojans (38.5 off/ppg-13.0 def/ppg) avoided the trap in last week's (49-19) decision over Durfee. This week the Rams will give BR its biggest test of the year so far. The Rams have sharpened their horns against #2 Dracut and the always tough Lincoln-Sudbury Warriors. Game on in one of the marquee games of the week. Next up the New Bedford Whalers.

#17-(18.0)-CHELMSFORD (2-0) vs Haverhill (0-2), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (19). The Lions (20.0 off/ppg-14.0 def/ppg) had a huge overtime win over Acton-Boxboro (28-21) to end their 10 game losing streak against the Colonials. This week they take on a game but undermanned Haverhill team with Lawrence to follow.

#18 (tie)-(19.80)-WESTFORD ACADEMY (2-0) vs Wayland (1-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (NR). The Grey Ghosts (52.0 off/ppg-22.5 def/ppg) have lit up the scoreboard through the first two weeks of the season. This week it is a home tilt against Wayland before traveling to Masconomet next week. Red Alert, "trap game".

#18 (tie)-(19.80)-LYNN ENGLISH (2-0) @ Beverly (1-0), 1:00pm (Saturday)

Last week's rank (NR). The Bulldogs (38.0 off/ppg-29.5 def/ppg) are Emass's version of the Dan Fouts lead San Diego Chargers with a whopping 135 combined points being scored in their first two games. This week they play a a very tough Beverly Panther team coming off their opening day (25-6 over Melrose) win last week. A home battle against the Danvers Falcons is on the horizon.

#20-(20.95)-KING PHILIP (2-0) vs Sharon (1-1), 7:00pm (Friday)

Last week's rank (20). The Warriors (38.5 off/ppg-3.0 def/ppg) have feasted on its first two opponents this year. The problem is they could win their next four games, be (6-0) and drop out of the Top 20 as they face Sharon, Oliver Ames, Canton and Fairhaven. Interesting stat of the week comes from the Warriors where sophomore running back Charles Ruffin (12-222, 18.5 avg, 2 TD's) through two games.

Dropping out were Masconomet, St. John's Prep and Bishop Feehan.

For a look at the rest of the EMass football's Week 3 schedule it is available on Danny V's Boston Herald blog.
